I was drafted into the Army in March of 1943. I was in my sophomore year at Louisiana State University and had had ROTC training in Field Artillery.  I had been at the induction center for 6 days when I was told to ship out.  I ended up at the Signal Corps Replacement Training Center, at Camp Kohler, CA.  How I got there I still do not know. Anyway after basic training as a  telephone lineman, I was accepted into the ASTP and went to the STAR unit at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. About a month later, I was sent across the country to Indiana University to the Engineering Program. We were housed in a former women's dorm. We started the fall semester in Sept. of 1943.  I was in B Company, which was commanded by a Lt. Westmoreland, In Dec. my company was transferred to the Univ. of Cincinatti and in Feb. of 1944, the program was terminated. Forunatly, I was sent back to the Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth, NJ where I trained as a cryptographer. I was discharged in April of 1946 and was overseas in the south of France for some 18 mos.
